This is a group of templates that provide an easy method to link to student population statistics for UK universities and other UK higer education institutions. The templates should be updated annually as the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) releases new data, thus it should not be necessary to manually update the articles or their references. The next update is due in 2026 and is for the 2024/25 academic year. Universities are identified by an institution identifier as a parameter, which is published alongside each university by HESA. This institution identifier was called INSTID by HESA and is presently still called INSTID in the templates. HESA now uses the UKPRN instead, but the identifier parameter is still called INSTID here.

The templates are:

• {{HESA student population}} – gives the total student population
• {{HESA FTE student population}} – gives the total student population by Full-time equivalent figures
• {{HESA undergraduate population}} – gives the total undergraduate student population
• {{HESA postgraduate population}} – gives the total postgraduate student population
• {{HESA student population rank}} – where the university lies in a list ordered by total student population (highest first)
• {{HESA total}} – gives the current total number of universities
• {{HESA citation}} – gives a citation for the source of student data
• {{HESA year}} – gives the academic year to which the student data applies (not the year it was generated)
• {{HESA academic staff population}} – gives the academic staff population
• {{HESA non-academic staff population}} – gives the non-academic staff population
• {{HESA staff citation}} – gives a citation for the source of staff data
• {{HESA staff year}} – gives the academic year to which the staff data applies (not the year it was generated)
